WHAT IS AN EXPUNGEMENT?
Generally speaking, an expungement is erasing your criminal record. When you are arrested, different Pennsylvania agencies begin to create a record for you.
WHY SHOULD I GET AN EXPUNGEMENT?
There are many reasons to get an expungement – the main one being for employment purposes. Companies will generally run a criminal background check on an individual before hiring them. If they see that you have a criminal record, they may be less inclined to hire you.
AM I ELIGIBLE FOR AN EXPUNGEMENT?
Each situation is unique, and it is recommended you contact an expungement attorney to discuss your specific situation. Generally speaking the following are eligible to be cleared from your record :
- ARD Offenses
- Summary Offenses – when the person has had no other offenses for at least 5 years
- Charges that were Nolle Prossed, Withdrawn, or Dismissed
HOW MUCH DOES AN EXPUNGEMENT COST?
The cost of an expungement varies by county. You will have to pay a filing fee with the clerk of courts (Philadelphia, for example charges $15.00) when the expungement forms are fist filed. Assuming your expungement is granted, some counties will charge an additional fee to send out the expungement orders. Allegheny County, for example charges $100.00 to send out orders to the various agencies.
